29th January, 2009. The last two days have been invested in testing the RX-8 engine on a professional engine dyno testing facility. The engine being tested made base-line horsepower figures of 225 HP running on pump gas, in naturally aspirated form. With Hymee’s registered design Twin-Screw Supercharger kit fitted, the engine produced a maximum of 340HP on 98RON pump gas. In a interesting “eco friendly” bio-fuel experiment with 85% Ethanol blended fuel, Hymee and his team managed to extract 360HP from the Renesis.
From the dyno results shown to the left, you can see the benefit of the twin-screw supercharger in providing a nice “fat” torque curve that gives an almost linear increase in power delivery across the board, as would be expected by using a larger capacity motor. The best thing is the clever use of the supercharger by-pass valving which allows the supercharge to not make any boost when low load conditions are present (even whilst cruising) giving the economy of the original 1.3 capacity engine. When you want the power, you get it straight away – ready to snap you back in the seat right when you ask for it. These results are very encouraging after a number of years of hard work and engineering. The benefits of E85 were very apparent and quite pleasing, and really the icing on the cake!
